We invite you to the opening of the exhibition at Zwierzyniec House.

Another exhibition from the Zwierzyniec invites... series presents the history of this area, formerly called Garbary, lying on the north-west side of the Krakow city walls in front of the Szewska Gate. It was the most populous jurydka in the Kraków area and also the most developed one from the economic point of view. Its inhabitants were characterized by a high degree of professional specialization – this suburb owed its name to the local tanners (pol. "garbarze", hence the name "Garbary") who had numerous, though small workshops and used to deal with the production of leather. In the second half of the 19th century, this area evolved into a modern district of Kraków, and the cross-section of its society changed accordingly. It was here that popular art salons were located (including those hosted by the Żeleński, Estreicher and Przybyszewski families) and theatres initiated their activities. People associated with the artistic and scientific life of the city used to live and create here.

We invite you to discover some of the known and unknown stories from the history of the Garbary district. They will be presented in detail with exhibits from the collections of the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow and other museums, archives and church collections, as well as through digital film reconstruction and interviews with the inhabitants of contemporary Garbary.

The exhibition is organised under the auspices of the Council of District No. 1 – Old Town.

Duration of the exhibition: 21.09.2019 – 17.05.2020
Place: Zwierzyniec House, ul. Królowej Jadwigi 41
